Doors and Windows: Internal Competition Theme October 2023

The subject for the October 2023 theme category in internal competitions is Doors & Windows.  The deadline for submitting an image is October 5, 2023.   This should be a simple subject for any member of the club to find and photograph.  Remember that the theme category is not like a scavenger hunt; not just any snapshot will not work.  The purpose is to find and photograph an interesting scene or subject, keeping in mind the elements that make for a good photograph.  Windows can create mystery, story, and visual design.

Patterns are almost always interesting whether they offer repetitive shapes, contrasting shapes close to one another, repeating colours or colour contrast . Remember that a pattern creates the most robust interest when there is a break in the pattern. This may not always be possible, but you should be on the lookout for opportunity.

A vertical crop could eliminate distraction;  don’t be afraid to turn your camera to the vertical.

An open door or window welcomes us to enter and explore what is beyond.

Get close; door details can be beautiful.

Looking inward and outward.  Peeking into or out of a window creates a mystery and story and often provides excitement through visual design. Perhaps, someone in one of the windows is looking out?

Pay careful attention to the glass. Make the reflections work for you and not against you. Youmay be able to return at another time or use a polarizing filter to eliminate reflections.

Motion is a very potent visual element. Using movement around your window can generate subconscious excitement. Perhaps a blowing curtain can be shot at a slow shutter speed.

Use your imagination and experiment.

Use colour and shapes to grab the viewer's interest.

Reflections in the window distract from the image.

Create your own patterns with Photoshop. Remember that for competitions all images and elements used in a composite image must be of your own making; do not use elements from the internet
