Having the opportunity to experience and photograph the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, was a dream come true for me, combining my deep interest in astronomy with my passion for photography.

London is a city of intersections — between light and shadow, stone and glass, movement and emotion. It is a mix of historical & modern seemingly designed to be photographed in monochrome.

We begin with an introduction by Kahsia Hartwell, Ulana’s friend and one of our VCC members, before following the story behind her project and book. Ulana also shares how she created the photograph on the book’s cover: a sea Torii covered in ice and snow.

Anne McCarthy shares her thoughts on the inspiration behind her upcoming exhibit, Light Reigns, Shadows Rule, November 18-December 7, 2025 at The Gage Gallery. A new lens, an unfamiliar place, a get-together with like-minded people, or the promise of a walk are common inspirations that encourage us to create images.

In 2024, I travelled to Japan on a photography workshop that has impacted my composition style significantly. My impression of Japan was shaped overwhelmingly by its immense population of 124 million people crowded into the world’s 11th most populous country. Space is at such a premium that designing for the optimal use of it is paramount. Equally, such a valuable commodity should be pleasing to the eye.

A few spots of rain in the latter two weeks of August held promise for a decent mushroom bloom in the remaining months of 2024. Given the dryness of the prior two years, this offered the possibility of a new dimension for my daily walks and hikes in and around Victoria. Close to normal rainfall in the ensuing four months supported a mushroom bloom to be remembered. VCC members enjoyed the benefits during the always popular mushroom field trips at the Royal Roads property.
