As is tradition, following our Annual General Meeting (AGM), I’m pleased to present the annual State-of-the-Club President’s message to our members.
Board Continuity and Leadership
I am pleased to share some excellent news: all seven board members will continue in their roles for the upcoming term. Four members’ terms were up, and each chose to stand for nomination again and remain on the board.
This continuity is tremendous for our club. These members have served for several years, have become adept in their roles, and continue to demonstrate strong leadership. Their experience and commitment are particularly important as we face significant challenges over the next one to two years. A stable and cohesive team is essential to meet these challenges head-on.
The Strength of Our Membership
The strength of our club extends well beyond the board. More than 60 dedicated members have stepped forward to fill essential roles, helping ensure our club remains one of the best in Canada. Their contributions make our club a welcoming and vibrant place for all.
Our members are the heart and foundation of the club. We exist to serve you, and none of this would be possible without your dedication, effort, and passion. Because of you, our club continues to be one of the most vibrant and outstanding in Canada.
Growth, Learning, and Community
Over the years, countless members have grown and learned within the club, gaining valuable skills and knowledge. This impact extends beyond our membership and enriches the broader community, fostering creativity and connection.
Beyond learning and artistic development, the club also serves as a social hub. Many members have formed close, lasting friendships here. For many of us, these relationships are a primary reason for joining—reminding us that community is just as important as our art.
Membership Growth: A Shared Responsibility
Now, more than ever, we need active participation from our members to keep the club strong and growing. One of the challenges we currently face is stagnation in membership numbers.
Attracting new members is essential. They bring fresh perspectives, renewed energy, and help strengthen the club’s financial foundation.
To support this, I encourage every member to help spread the word. Simple actions—sharing information with friends, or leaving brochures at favourite locations—can make a real difference. Many people in our city are still unaware of our club, and most new members find us only through online searches. Increasing our visibility is key to future growth.
Learning from Other Clubs
I am also a member of other clubs, including those in London and Toronto. One of my goals is to learn from their practices and bring back ideas that can benefit our club.
A trend I’ve observed is an increased focus on the audio and video aspects of photography. The quality of work in these areas is impressive and adds meaningful value to those clubs.
I invite our members to consider whether expanding into audio and video production could be a positive step for us. Documentary-style projects, street photography, drone work, and video storytelling could add a new dimension to our activities—and provide powerful ways to showcase our artists across multiple media.
A Strong and United Board
I am grateful for the unity and camaraderie of our board. We’ve developed strong friendships alongside our working relationships, which makes managing the club both effective and enjoyable.
While we may have differing perspectives at times, our decisions are always unanimous—reflecting mutual respect and a shared commitment to putting the club first.
Looking Ahead
With a strong board and active member participation, the Victoria Camera Club will continue to thrive as one of Canada’s leading clubs.
Our success depends not only on leadership but on the collective effort and dedication of every member.
