Drone Workshop

A Photographers Guide to Drones

On March 10, club member Dan Doherty delivered an informative and well-structured workshop on drone photography.  Organized by your Workshop Committee, this in-person workshop gave the 9 participants lots of helpful information to get them into exploring the use of drones for their photography.

It was a great presentation and everyone learned a lot. People asked all sorts of questions.

Below is the slideshow that Dan used.

When you’re in the air above the world, it looks completely different. You look for patterns. The human eye naturally looks for patterns. With a little practice, you can see them.

3 Examples above

  • The Italian Garden in Winter
  • 3 shadows along the beach
  • The waves breaking against the rocks.

Dan had us doing exersizes to wake up our eyes to see patterns and shapes. This is a great thing to do not just for drones, but for all photgraphers before they start shooting.

Below are 3 examples of shots only a drone can take

Below are spec’s between different classes of drones. Under 250g and over 250g.
Note the cameras: They are very powerful for such small cameras.

In order to fly you need to download the NavCanada Drone app onto your phone. It will let you know if you can fly in an area or not. It’s free on the Play store for Android, or the Apple App store. You can also download it onto your laptop or home computer when you plan your drone mission.

Below are maps that you will see on your phone when you request permission to fly.

Field Trip - March 14th

After our workshop we arranged a field trip to Prospect Lake Elementary School at 321 Prospect Lake Rd. We used their soccer field and everyone had a chance to fly. Everyone learned a lot and it was a fun expericance. We had guests who where non-members of our club and they brought a lot to the meeting.

Dan started by giving everyone a quick lecture on the rules and regulations, then everyone had a chance to get a machine into the air.

NOTE: This blog goes out to hundreds of non-members of the Victoria Camera Club. If you are interested in drones, or photography in general, come as a guest to any of our events, including drone field trips, let us know by visiting our website:
