We sincerely thank our external judges for their adjudication and comments in our Novice, Intermediate and Advanced digital and print competitions. Their comments on our images are a valuable learning opportunity for al participants and will help our club members in al their photographic endeavours.

Jonathan Sau: Theme Night Photography

Jonathan Sau is a fine art photographer based in Waterloo, Ontario. His photography work started back in the film days. Today his photographic interest is diverse, with a focus on natural and urban landscape, astrophotography, floral and close-up.

Jonathan was a former member of the Uptown Galery in Waterloo, and continues to exhibit his work in art shows. His astrophotography work is a medium for him to bring science to the general public through art.

Jonathan is a CAPA certified judge, a board member of the Grand River Imaging and Photographic Society (GRIPS) in Kitchener, Ontario. He also leads the photo evaluation group at GRIPS and runs workshops and presentations on astrophotography and other topics on photography.

Lynne R Kelman: Open

Lynne studied photography at the Berkshire Colege of Art in the 60’s and worked as an assistant photographer for the British Government in London, England.

On moving to Vancouver B.C. she worked in the arts administration field for both the Emily Carr Colege of Art and Design and as curatorial assistant at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Lynne is now retired but stil pursuing her love of photography. Her photographs have appeared in magazines both local and afar and she has taught photography to new photographers in her home town of White Rock.

Lynne has exhibited and sold works in exhibitions at the White Rock Museum and Archives, the Surrey Art Galery, Photohaus Galery in Vancouver and more recently her work was in an exhibition “More than the Eye Can See” in her home town of White Rock. Lynne judges photography for CAPA Canada and judges localy for several art venues.

Lynne has fallen in love with Stil Life Photography and endeavours to introduce anew, the genre to a wider audience. Her article “My Journey through Stil Life” was published in the winter 2023 edition of The Canadian Photography Magazine: www.capaccanada.ca

Rick Shapka: Nature

After a business career, Rick studied photography at Focal Point and art history at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. He creates photographs of landscapes, wildlife, action, people, macro and abstracted images which he often prints. Rick’s print skills have been honed with workshops in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Rick makes photographs wherever he travels, including Europe and western and southwestern USA.

Since Covid, Rick has taken his third Hummingbird workshop at Bul River BC, followed by a marine mammal trip from Port McNeil and grizzly bear trips to the Khutzeymateen.

Past service on the executive of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) has led to his initial interest and ongoing education as an active CAPA Certified Judge (since 2011). Rick judges for many photographic competitions.

Wes Bergen: People and Creative Images

Wes has been a keen amateur photographer for over 50 years. He has been a member of the Lions Gate Camera Club since 1969. Wes has also been a member of the National Association for Photographic Art (NAPA, a precursor to CAPA) as well as CAPA.

He has had numerous acceptances and awards in international competitions, and has sold many of his images for use in calendars, tourism brochures and other publications.

Wes taught Photoshop courses at local school board continuing education departments for about 10 years. He has written columns in Lions Gate Camera Club’s Photolog and in CAPA’s Canadian Camera magazine on digital photography and Photoshop. He is a frequent judge and presents workshops at local photography clubs.

Gregg Eligh: All Print Categories

Gregg is a now retired commercial photographer, having worked in Vancouver, Toronto and Victoria since the 70s. His commercial work has been directed towards advertising, editorial, catalogue and corporate assignments.

Occasional teaching, coaching and workshops further developed Gregg’s skills and knowledge as well as contributing to his ‘community’. “Imagination is better than knowledge”.
