Victoria Wins 2025 Friendly Competition With Eastwood

Once again, Spring heralded the annual friendly competition between Eastwood Photographic Society from Glasgow, Scotland, and Victoria Camera Club. This event was suggested by Douglas Bain, a member of both clubs, after his emigration from Scotland to Canada. As Eastwood Club Secretary at that time, I thought it was a great idea and between us we created a format which would involve the greatest participation by club members of all abilities and, uniquely, a judge from both countries, giving their take on each entry.

The competition has spanned nearly two decades, each club submitting 30 images, 15 from advanced (Eastwood’s Division One) members and 15 from intermediate (Eastwood Division Two) members. The Scottish judge this year was Jim Stevenson with Victoria inviting Leah Gray to be the Canadian judge.

Both judges agreed that the images were of a high quality with one photo from each club, scoring highest with 38 out of 40. These were ‘Bald as a Coot’ by Malcolm Martin (EPS) and ‘Resting on Mom’s side’ by Daniel Rondeau (VCC).

For those Victoria members who could not view the 60 images here there are a few from Eastwood that we hope you might enjoy.

Many congratulations to the Victoria authors on an overall win between 986 to 979. We look forward to meeting up again next year. Have a good Summer and enjoy your photography.

“The image was taken in Victoria Park in Glasgow. Spring is always a good time for wildlife and the new chicks quickly get used to people, thereby allowing photographers to get that bit closer. It was taken with my Canon R7 with a Canon EF 100-400mm lens at 400mm, a shutter speed of 1/800th of a second at f5.6 and ISO 1000. I took a low viewpoint by lying on my side on a foam mat. It was hand held and I carried out simple processing in Photoshop.”

“I have always been interested in photography and was at my most competitive in the mid 90s, mostly with Nikon equipment and slide film. Following short spells in two Renfrewshire clubs I joined Eastwood Photographic Society in 2020. My passion is wildlife photography and most of my spare time is spent doing that. Otherwise, motorsport, military aircraft and landscapes provide alternative challenges.”
