March 25 – Intermediate/Advanced Image Review with Jill Turyk, 7-9pm via Zoom

This image review session is an opportunity for intermediate and advanced members to receive valuable objective feedback about their work. Jill Turyk and a guest reviewer will assess 12 images per session. The reviewers will place emphasis on where and how the photographers have been successful in meeting their goals and intent. Through discussions with the photographers, the reviewers hope to suggest ideas that might help the photographers to better convey their intent.  The guest reviewer for this session will be Jim Fowler.
Although these reviews are not meant to be preparation for competition, and Jill is hesitant to score images, the scoring process may help members self-evaluate their images in the future. Therefore, we can discuss the scoring process if requested.

Jill hopes to provide ideas that will encourage members to review their own images. While it is important to become an effective critic of your own work, it is equally important to appreciate what you have accomplished.
Though the images up for review will be from intermediate and advanced members, all VCC members are welcome to attend and learn from each session. You must register to receive the Zoom invitation, which is sent to you on the day of the workshop.

How to Submit Images for Review
Intermediate and Advanced members should send one image to Jill when they receive the email request for submission, usually 2 weeks prior to the review session.
Please include the following information in your image submission email:
·      Image title in the name of the JPG submitted
·      Size the image: maximum 1400 pixels wide x 1050 pixels tall, at 300 dpi, no watermarks
·      Camera metadata – f stop, ISO speed, focal (lens) length, shutter speed
·      A brief statement of what you expected to achieve with your image
·      Submit to

March 31 – Urban Abstract Photography Workshop (In Person Event)
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN IN-PERSON WORKSHOP, to be held from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM in Room 200, Fisher Building, Camosun College Lansdowne Campus (3100 Foul Bay Road).

Rick Lawrence works in a number of different photographic styles but is best known for his abstract and minimal images produced from photographs taken in urban environments, either his immediate environs or on his travels in Canada, South America and Europe.  Urban abstract photography is about seeing your town or city differently.  Rather than documenting a city’s most recognizable or photographed features, Rick looks for the relationship between lines, shapes, patterns, textures, colour and the interplay of light and shadow in streets and alleyways. It is often a seemingly uninteresting fragment within a particular field of view that reveals hidden beauty or perspectives that are often overlooked in the bustle of urban life.

This workshop will aim to inspire you to see your surroundings in new ways. Rick will talk about his influences, discuss his approach to seeing and taking photographs, and will demonstrate some of his post-processing techniques. Participants are welcome to bring their own computers/laptops if they wish to follow along or try out some ideas.  Rick primarily uses Lightroom and Photoshop; a basic understanding of these tools would be useful but not essential.
