November 2024 Internal Competition Judges

We sincerely thank our external judges for their adjudication and comments in our Novice, Intermediate and Advanced digital and print competitions.  Their comments on our images are a valuable learning opportunity for all participants and will help our club members in all their photographic endeavours.

Rick Shapka:  Nature

After a business career, Rick studied photography at Focal Point and art history at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver.  He creates photographs of landscapes, wildlife, action, people, macro and abstracted images which he often prints.  Rick’s print skills have been honed with workshops in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Rick makes photographs wherever he travels, including Europe and western and southwestern USA.

Since Covid, Rick has taken his third Hummingbird workshop at Bull River BC, followed by a marine mammal trip from Port McNeil and grizzly bear trips to the Khutzeymateen.

Past service on the executive of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) has led to his initial interest and ongoing education as an active CAPA Certified Judge (since 2011).  Rick judges for many photographic competitions.

Glenn Bloodworth:  Open

Glenn is a visual artist, with degrees from Algonquin College’s   Photographic Techniques Program, and the School of Photographic Arts Ottawa (SPAO), receiving a diploma in Photographic Arts and Production.  He works primarily in medium-format film and composite digital fine art, and his pieces are held in public and private collections in Canada and abroad, including the City of Ottawa’s Art Collection.  He exhibits extensively in Ottawa as well as nationally and internationally.  He has been featured in various press media, accorded numerous awards, and has published, including “Fine Art Photography” in the Canadian Camera, Spring 2021.  In January 2022 he was named LUXlife magazine’s “Landscape Photographer of the Year (Ontario)”.  

Glenn has been a Certified CAPA Judge since 2012.  Glenn judges extensively in Canadian and international photographic competitions; averaging 1.5 competitions a month over the past five years.  He is the Director of CAPA’s National Judges Program, a senior trainer in its judging course, and an assessor for its judging accreditation program. As well he is CAPA’s Ontario Zone Director.  In 2020 he was invested as a Fellow (FCAPA) of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA).

Kayla Stevenson:  Theme (Seascapes)


Kayla is an enthusiastic photographer.  She loves to travel all over the world, Africa is her favourite place for adventure and wildlife photography.  More recently, her journey has taken her more towards artistic interpretations of her images, both in camera and in her digital darkroom.  She is always exploring and learning new ways to present her photographic stories.

Kayla has been a mathematics teacher, a professional symphony musician and has spent more than 25 years in non-profit management focused on marketing and fundraising.

As an active volunteer, Kayla serves on the Executive of the Langley Camera Club.  She has  been a member of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) since 2010, and is a CAPA Certified Judge.  She currently serves on the National Board as Director of Membership.

Lynne Kelman:  People

Lynne studied photography at Berkshire College of Art and worked in arts administration until retirement.

She has embraced the digital photography world and has extensive knowledge of Photoshop techniques.  Lynne prints, mattes and frames all her own work in her digital darkroom.

Lynne gives lectures and talks on photography to local photography clubs, and is an active member of the Crescent Beach Photography Club.  She has taught photography and mentors locally.  Lynne also judges photography privately.  Her work has been published in local magazines and has hung in several galleries, in Canada and the United States.  In August 2022, she had a body of her work in an exhibition at the Newton Cultural Centre and also took part in a group exhibition at White Rock in January 2023 and 2024.

In 2024, 2025, Lynne will be offering Camera Clubs talks on both the technical and creative side of Still Life Photography.

Wes Bergen:  Altered Reality

Wes has been a keen amateur photographer for over 50 years.  He has been a member of the Lions Gate Camera Club since 1969.  Wes has also been a member of the National Association for Photographic Art (NAPA, a precursor to CAPA) as well as CAPA.

He has had numerous acceptances and awards in international competitions, and has sold many of his images for use in calendars, tourism brochures and other publications.

Wes taught Photoshop courses at local school board continuing education departments for about 10 years.  He has written columns in Lions Gate Camera Club’s Photolog and in CAPA’s Canadian Camera magazine on digital photography and Photoshop.  He is a frequent judge and presents workshops at local photography clubs.

Mike Byrne:  All Print Categories

Mike is one of the co-founders of Clock Tower Images in Victoria.  Growing up in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, he has always pursued outdoor activities.  As a natural extension, he started to produce outdoor adventure films and videos.  Mike leads international photography workshops with an emphasis on wildlife.  He has spoken at Victoria Camera Club’s competition nights regarding the judging of prints as well as conducting workshops on the use of flash in photography.
