Ferry Schedule
Depart Swartz Bay
9:00 am & 11:00 am/ You should arrive early (8:00am) to catch the 9:00 am ferry in order to give yourself lots of time to explore the venues. Lots of driving involved but you only need to visit the places that interest you. Some farms but not all have delicious food-lots of apples or fresh organic apple cider for sale.
Maps are provided only with ticket purchase.
Depart Fulford harbour:
1:50 pm
3:50 PM
5:50 PM
7:50 PM
Timing is everything when it comes to catching the ferry. This is a popular event so there will be the inevitable ferry lineup when it comes time to leave. Plan accordingly. Forecast is cloudy with a high of 20. No hurricanes or floods predicted!
I have always enjoyed this one day event for the opportunity to get some great shots of people/animals/old farms buildings/panoramas/food/people in long lines/or new friends. Fulford harbour will be busy while everyone waits for the ferry. Consider having extra water and snacks on hand before you get to the terminal so you can relax and enjoy your time and avoid another line.
Due to the nature of this event participants will be on their own with chance meetings at some of the venues.
We will meet at Swartz Bay in the vehicle lineup for the 9:00 am ferry.

Understanding and Using Composition with Jim Fowler – Part 1
The event will be held on October 30, 2023 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
NOTE: This is a two-part workshop meeting on Monday, October 30, and Monday, November 6 via Zoom. Registration for Part 1 will enroll you in both sessions.
Workshop Overview
Join Jim Fowler on an interesting and entertaining journey as we explore techniques and tools to improve composition. Good composition is an exercise in judgment. You can improve your composition skills by understanding some basics about how we see, how we look at pictures, and what tools are available. Learn how to forget what you first saw that captured your attention and think instead about the final image you want to produce.
In this practical and fun workshop, Jim shows what we can do with composition to improve the visual impact of our photos. Drawing on information from both scientific and artistic sources, Jim uses his own photos, and some famous photos and paintings to illustrate every tool and technique he talks about.
All participants will receive Jim’s written notes and select references the day after the presentation.
This workshop is available and suited to anyone in the Club. For many members, the workshop will provide a good survey of the whole field of composition. For others, it will be a refresher as well as an opportunity to see examples they may not have associated with a particular technique. In case you have participated in one of Jim’s excellent Composition workshops in prior years, he has completely revised his material and has added lots of new and informative illustrations.
This workshop is NOT about using your camera or software. It IS all about visualizing the image you will create and giving that image a structure that will help others see what you want them to see.
About Jim Fowler
A lifelong photographer, Jim joined VCC in 2016 and quickly became active in wide array of roles in the club; and this high level of activity continues to this day. From writing for the CloseUp club magazineto delivering workshops, Jim has demonstrated an ability to communicate what was new and exciting. He is a regular contributor at the Creative and Nature SIGs, Tuesday and field trip galleries, a guest commentator on the Advanced Image Review, chair of the External Competition Committee, member of both CAPA and PSA, and having twice attended the CAPA Image Judging workshop, Jim still gets excited when he talks about images.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS
Nature SIG
The event will be held on October 4, 2023 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
As always, the primary focus of this Nature SIG meeting is the sharing of recent or older images on any nature related topic. This is an opportunity for members at all levels of experience and expertise to learn from one another. Our definition of nature is very broad and we are constantly reminded of its presence in our urban environment with recent visitations of Biggs orcas in the inner harbour, mushrooms sprouting on boulevards, and turkey vulture raptors grouping and searching for thermals above James Bay to aid their annual migration south. We continue to meet by zoom. Please consider sharing images either from your screen or send them to the coordinators before the meeting at . If you are sharing from your screen it is helpful but not necessary to give the coordinators a heads up prior to the meeting. If you have questions or need assistance, we are at . The ZOOM link will be posted on the day of the meeting under the website heading of Members Only.

Wendy Duffield
Wendy’s exquisite art has been called wonderfully charming, intriguing, unique, and enigmatic. Her art is best experienced in person and each piece invites the viewer to discover, and to reminisce. Her mixed media collages incorporate layers of fabric, paper, photographs and tulle, allowing further patterns and images to emerge the more carefully you look. You’ll find wearable books rich with images and ephemera to transport you to another time and place.
Wendy completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Alberta, and studied jewellery making in Australia where she lived for over 25 years. She conducts art classes for children and adults at Magnolia Art studio in North Saanich, British Columbia, Canada.
